Abstract

At the dawn of the third decade of the 21st century, humanity is facing one of the most controversial changes of recent times: social confinement. This stems from the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. This situation gave rise to a reorganization of socio-economic activities at the global level. In this historical context, intellectuals such as Naomi Klein, Boaventura de Sousa Santos or Noam Chomsky, have declared in television interviews that humanity is on the verge of a transcendental change. From an economic point of view, indicators point to China becoming the richest country on the planet, surpassing the United States as the hegemonic power. This geopolitical shift derives, in turn, from the technological and financial struggle, as has been the case with Huawei, 5G and Tik Tok. Other critical voices consider that humanity is facing a "new Cold War" between these two countries, with the danger of nuclear and hydrogen bombs acting as contemporary swords of Damocles. In addition, environmental studies show us the challenges of a climate change that has already begun, and which demands other ways of producing and consuming. Since the pandemic and social isolation began, many people have lost their jobs, have been forced to migrate and poverty rates have increased. Of course, children and young people have been hard hit, as many schools, colleges, institutes and universities have closed their doors: depriving them of a decent, quality education. At the same time, teleworking has increased for many people. The school system of Ecuador is inserted in this field of virtual education in all its educational levels: initial, basic, high school and university.
