Abstract

In spite of the vast amount of scientific research related to the facility layout problem, only a limited literature has focused on plant layout evaluation. Thus, little interest has also been taken to industrial facilities relayout. In this context, the study introduces an index to evaluate the existing plant layout performance by identifying its positioning between the ideal and anti-ideal scenario. The resultant index value could facilitate to industrial operation managers the making of strategic relayout decisions without requiring deep mathematical knowledge. The procedure to obtain the index is illustrated in a case study carried out at a company of the metal components processing industry in Ecuador.
