Abstract
Heat transfer is the science that deals with the analysis of the rate of energy transfer that can occur between material bodies as a result of a temperature difference. This science can predict: • How heat energy can be transferred. • The speed at which this exchange takes place under certain specific conditions. • Temperatures as a function of time. In the study of heat transfer, three different forms of transfer are usually considered: conduction, convection and radiation (Figure 1.1). In reality, the temperature distribution in a medium is controlled by the combined effects of these three forms of heat transfer; however, to simplify the analysis, only one of them can be considered when the others are negligible.
