Abstract

In recent decades, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a key tool for transforming various sectors of society. Since its inception in the 1950s, it has evolved and today impacts areas such as medicine, education, and the economy. This book explores how AI can promote the inclusion of people with disabilities, a field with great potential still largely unexplored. It provides a detailed analysis, supported by over ten years of experience, on the impact of AI in the lives of people with disabilities in Ecuador, with an interdisciplinary approach that considers education, technology, and administrative sciences. Through real-life cases of individuals in Ecuador, it examines improvements in their access to education and employment thanks to AI, ranging from higher education to informal or formal employment. The text highlights how these technologies can foster autonomy and improve job opportunities, while also supporting families in helping their loved ones gain greater independence. It also addresses Ecuadorian legislation that requires companies to hire people with disabilities and how this promotes a diverse and skilled workforce. The book also includes references to international experiences, such as the case of Auticon in the United States, which hires people with autism, and reflects on how AI can contribute to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Divided into four chapters, the text explores the applicability of AI in education and work for people with limitations in their limbs, vision, hearing, and intellectual abilities. Its goal is to inspire academics and decision-makers to consider AI as a key tool for social inclusion.
