Abstract
Air quality in a city with the characteristics of Cuenca is closely related to different factors such as the distance to the main emission sources, the type of emissions, the relief and atmospheric conditions (Jerves and Armijos, 2016). At year 2007, it was determined that the main source of atmospheric pollutants it was vehicular traffic with a contribution of 85% of emissions totals (Palacios and Espinoza, 2014). In particular, the engines Diesel have extensive use compared to gasoline engines due to its low operating costs, energy efficiency, high durability and reliability, which likewise makes them one of the biggest culprits for environmental pollution caused by exhaust emissions through the release of monoxide carbon (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) mainly (Reşitoğlu et al., 2015). To determine the concentration of these pollutants, especially NOx in 2008 the Municipality of Cuenca started monitoring of ambient air quality from a network of monitoring that currently includes 20 sampling points per passive diffusion (Jerves and Armijos, 2016; Sellers and Espinoza, 2017).
