Abstract

Debating the relevance and predominant role of education in society might seem rhetorical; however, in times of uncertainty and constant change, this reflection continues to hold special importance. Education and progress have been, since the dawn of humanity, co-responsible elements for transition and advancement. Thus, envisioning society and its constant evolution positions education as the key holder of the master key that opens the doors to the future. For this reason, education has been considered a form of lifelong learning, whose main mission is the integral formation of the Being. Consequently, it must rely on appropriate procedures and techniques to fulfill its purpose. As Novak (1988, p. 180) stated: “Education is a complex activity, and we must be flexible in deciding how to construct and interpret educational events.”Today's social dynamics present scenarios in which the break with traditional conceptions regarding people’s integration into the world has led to the incorporation of new concepts and actions in relation to their formation. In this way, innovative requirements have been proposed for the development of both personal and professional competencies, and the scope of action of educational systems has expanded. Consequently, the challenge is to promote changes with a forward-looking vision, directing educational institutions toward new horizons—new spaces of inspiration—where teaching and learning processes become truly meaningful and contextualized experiences, aimed at responding to the needs and demands of the third millennium.
