Abstract

The knowledge of hydrology in Ecuador is very limited due to the insufficient bibliography that does not satisfy the needs of those who study this subject. The difficulty to learn this subject is high, which motivated to write this compendium of "Basic and Applied Hydrology" based on recognized books in the country, as well as experiences lived by the author in the field and as a teacher at the Salesian Polytechnic University. In this context, the treatise covers from elementary concepts such as introduction to hydrology, basic elements of the hydrological cycle, scientific principles that govern it, and even the techniques most used in practice for the quantification of these phenomena applied to the solution of problems in the field of civil engineering. The author's experience in the fields of hydrology, hydraulics, and formulation of civil engineering projects and water resources, accompanied by an adequate bibliography, allows a balanced exposition of the components of the hydrologic cycle as a system, the characteristics of the hydrographic basins that serve as a basis for the quantification of the different hydrologic parameters, and the existing relationship between hydrology and meteorology with the different instruments and equipment used for their measurement in the field.
