Hachi: Development of a Gamified Video Game with Artificial Intelligence Integration for Animal Protection Awareness

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

In light of growing concerns about animal protection, this study presents the development of Hachi, a gamified video game designed to raise awareness about animal abuse and promote respect for wildlife. The primary objective was to create a gamified video game that raises awareness of animal protection and evaluate its effectiveness in educating players through the use of interactive technology and artificial intelligence (AI). The methodology employed included 3D modeling in a Low Poly style using Blender and programming in Unreal Engine. Additionally, AI techniques such as Behavior Trees and Blackboard were implemented to enable adaptive NPC (non-player character) behaviors, enhancing interactivity and immersion within the game environment. The game features a series of scenarios in which players make decisions related to animal care, fostering active and reflective learning. The survey results from 50 university students indicate that the game is highly valued for its graphical quality, playability, and ability to raise awareness about animal abuse. Of the respondents, 88% reported that the video game encouraged them to take preventive actions against animal abuse. In conclusion, the findings demonstrate that gamification, supported by AI, can be an effective educational tool for promoting animal protection, suggesting potential future applications of this approach in other educational fields related to sustainability and the environment.
