Abstract

The present study investigates in the existing documentation, information that allows to historically evaluate the desertification process with a multitemporal and multicriteria analysis through geographic information systems (GIS), in order to determine the necessary guidelines to revert, control and prevent this process in the province of Azuay. In the period 1982 and 2008, the areas not susceptible to desertification decreased by 2.28 %, and the areas with potential susceptibility by 3.75 %; while the fragile areas increased by 0.71 %, and the areas with critical susceptibility by 5.32 %.
