Abstract
There is no doubt that education is a constant endeavor, never finished and always in permanent readjustment, and it is from this dynamic and unfinished conception that the need and relevance of the Philosophy of Education within the framework of contemporary Educational Sciences is understood. However, the structure of today’s society, strongly shaped by capitalist liberalism, privileges professionals and consumers who conform to the free-market model, which operates through alienating dynamics of consumption and disposal that hinder the critical and self-critical (metacognitive) dimension of the various actors in education. The problem becomes more severe when much of contemporary formal education is organized uncritically in accordance with the characteristics of postmodern, neoliberal, capitalist, and consumerist society, most of the time with reductive and impoverishing views of reality that disregard the complex structure of reality in general and of education in particular.
