Abstract

In the following paper, a comparative performance analysis of an optical communication system with 4-evel Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM-4) data, with and without dispersion pre-compensation, is performed. This took place over a passive optical network (PON) throughout two scenarios: an experimental setup using real equipment and simulations using Optsim™. Data was transmitted at 10 Gbaud/s, using 20km and 45 km of G652D single-mode fiber. The PAM4 bauds were coded using the Gray's codification. Experimental results show that there is a 1 dB penalty for achieving a goal BER of 10-3 when transmitting without dispersion pre-compensation.
