Abstract
The first positive case of COVID-19 in Ecuador was a 71-year-old woman living in Torrejón, a municipality in the Community of Madrid, Spain, who arrived in the country on Valentine's Day 2020 to visit her family and friends in her city of origin: Babahoyo. A month later, and after multiple disagreements with the national health system, the woman, with a history of hypertension, died in Guayaquil on March 13, while her relatives, part of the first epidemiological fence, fought in isolation against the virus and in most cases, survived (Heredia & González, 2020). Edmundo Armando Grijalva Brito , Francisco Delgado: What lessons have been learned from this first anniversary of the fight against the coronavirus? First, it has been ruled out that the woman in Torrejón was the only "patient zero". It is now thought that there were countless asymptomatic carriers who entered the country before and after the dates associated with the first positive (El Universo, 2020), and except for a few unsustainable months of absolute border closure, that situation never changed. Just a few days ago, the first infected carrier of the British strain of SARS-CoV-2 was confirmed, and by a coincidence, again in the central province of Los Ríos, this time in Quevedo, contracted by a traveler from London (MSP, 2021). Thus, except for extremely small or isolated societies (Kiribati, Turkmenistan, North Korea), no restrictive measures anywhere in the world were effective enough to keep nations free of the disease.
