Abstract

This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis on the implementation of the metaverse in higher education from 2019 to 2024. The metaverse, defined as an immersive virtual environment, is emerging as a revolutionary tool with the potential to profoundly transform the educational field by facilitating real-time interactions through digital avatars. The research will focus on analyzing publication trends and patterns, predominant research approaches, and gaps in current knowledge about the application of the metaverse in higher education. It will use bibliometric indicators and tools like VOSviewer to examine the co-citation of selected documents from the SCOPUS database. The search criteria were "Metaverse" and "Higher education." Once the bibliometric analysis was completed, the results were interpreted to extract significant conclusions about the current state of research. The bibliometric analysis revealed that while interest in the metaverse in higher education is increasing, there are still under-researched areas that require attention. The findings indicate that the implementation of the metaverse can significantly optimize interactivity and learning immersion, but it also presents technical and pedagogical challenges. It is recommended that future research focuses on developing robust theoretical frameworks and exploring empirical studies that evaluate the metaverse's impact across various educational disciplines. This bibliometric study seeks to consolidate available information, identify research trends and patterns, and propose recommendations for advancing the use of the metaverse in higher education.
