Abstract
The present work was based on the multi-temporal analysis of deforestation in the provinces of Pastaza and Orellana in the Amazon region of Ecuador, these being the provinces that have the largest area of primary forest, with an area of 5125,000 ha. The objective was to estimate the deforestation rate of both provinces in the period 2000-2020 with Landsat 7 and 8 satellite images; the methodology included the preprocessing, processing and composition of maps in the ENVI and ArcMap software for the classification of land use and vegetation cover that was proposed, its validity was verified through separability analysis, confusion matrix, Kappa index and field visits . Based on the information obtained from the multi-temporal analysis, the equation proposed by the FAO was applied to calculate the rate of deforestation, obtaining the following results: for the period 2000-2005, a rate of change of -0.13%, in the period 2005-2010 the value of -0.25%, in the period 2010-2015 the value of -0.87%, finally in the period 2015-2020 the value of -2.94%. According to the data obtained, the growth of the agricultural frontier was verified, which includes pastures, open areas, as well as urban growth and oil activity that directly infer the loss of forest cover.
