Abstract

This chapter explores the environmental impact of traditional energy sources, highlighting the urgent need to transition from fossil fuels to sustainable alternatives. It begins by examining the characteristics and environmental implications of conventional energy sources such as coal, oil, natural gas, and biomass. While historically significant for industrial development, these sources pose substantial threats to ecological integrity, public health, and climate stability through greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and resource depletion. The chapter emphasizes the importance of evaluating the environmental consequences of these energy sources against emerging alternatives, including solar, wind, hydropower, and bioenergy. Furthermore, it discusses the pivotal role of policy frameworks and technological innovations, particularly in the context of integrating fuel cells into energy systems, to facilitate this transition. By summarizing the pressing challenges and potential pathways forward, the chapter ultimately advocates for a concerted global effort to embrace sustainable energy practices that prioritize environmental protection and equitable access to energy resources for future generations.
