Abstract
Virtual learning environments are online resources that allow interaction for learning, they are classrooms without the limitations of walls; It is a virtual social construction space, mediated by applications for teachers and students to interact. The purpose of this research was to analyze virtual learning environments as an element to develop metacognitive skills in students from Fe y Alegría schools in the San Francisco municipality of Zulia state, Venezuela. It was based on the contributions of Rodríguez and Espinoza (2017), Onrubia (2016), Castellanos (2013), Salinas (2011), Silva (2011), SabulSky (2009), Martínez et al. (2008), among others. The methodology used had a quantitative approach, explanatory type with a non-experimental design and a survey observation technique. The sample was made up of 156 students taken from a population of 255 students, a Likert-type scale questionnaire was applied to it, with 5 alternative responses. According to the calculated Pearson correlation coefficient (0.858), it was possible to conclude that there is a close relationship between virtual learning environments and the development of metacognitive skills in students (knowing what is known, explaining how it was learned and even knowing how you can continue learning); Therefore, it is suggested that institutions continue to actively promote virtual learning environments for the development of metacognitive skills.
