Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease affects older adults in large numbers, hindering their ability to remain independent people and causes various symptoms both cognitive and emotional. Objective: To understand the perceptions of a caregiver in the city of Cuenca -Ecuador of a patient suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Methodology: The method used is qualitative phenomenological. A semi-structured interview of eight open-ended questions was created and applied to a 19-year-old female caregiver. Results:The use of psychoactive substances, specifically tobacco, is seen as the main risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. In addition to cognitive impairment, the patient may present psychomotor retardation of the lower limbs due to a lack of physical agility. For the caregiver, empathy and attention is essential to provide stability to the patient. Conclusion: A program with psychological strategies aimed at promoting caregiving for caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease is proposed.
