Abstract
In recent decades, the theory of global value chains has emerged with great force. This article reviews the abundant literature that has been published on the subject, with the aim of explaining the theoretical framework that underlies them. From this analytical perspective, the development process is limited to the processes of industrial upgrading. All of the above implies a challenge for Latin American economic development, since these structures imply processes of delocalization of productive activities, basically incompatible with the region's specialization in natural resources. Thus, Latin America's rentier development model does not fit in well with the type of buyer-driven chains that dominate contemporary capitalism due to their high degree of functional integration.
