Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of symbolic play on the acquisition of autonomy in deaf people. The methodology applied was framed in mixed research with descriptive scope, experimental design. The sample consisted of 24 children between 6 and 7 years old with profound deafness, who are in the second year of elementary school in a special institution of Hearing and Language, in the province of Pichincha, Quito-Ecuador. A checklist was used to measure autonomy, defined as a structured evaluation with an index of established criteria based on the Early Education curriculum of the Ministry of Education adapted to chronological age. Then a program was carried out for a month with a 30-minute session, twice a week, with activities such as: Let's travel in a train, we are builders, we are doctors, let's help put out the fire, let's play laundry, farm animals, let's go to the market, my routine. The results showed that the influential factors are motor development, emotional management and decision making. It is concluded that symbolic play provides a safe and stimulating environment for learning autonomous skills from an early age.
