Abstract

The origin of the armed conflict in Colombia dates back to the first two decades of the 20th century as a legacy of the disputes between two classic political parties: liberals and conservatives. The first skirmishes denoting ideological differences occurred during the second half of the 19th century and deepened during the 20th century. The intensity of the conflict varied; the differences were nuanced according to the political events taking place within the country. The penetration of North American capital and the implementation of a developmentalist economic model that sought to dynamize the economy through industry, contrasted with the model based on the valuation of land ownership, which led to a political process of preservation of socio-economic structures and, therefore, of the benefits of the middle and upper classes of Colombian society.
