Abstract
This work analyzes the socio-environmental impacts of mining in South America, with a particular focus on Ecuador. Using statistical data, articles, news, and databases such as the Observatory of Mining Conflicts in Latin America (OCMAL), countries are categorized according to the number of conflicts generated by mining. It is highlighted that Chile and Peru have the highest number of conflicts, while in Ecuador, despite its smaller territorial extent, significant socio-environmental problems are observed due to the lack of regulation in illegal mining. The results underscore the need for better management and regulation to mitigate the adverse effects on the environment and local communities.
