Abstract
The television industry in Ecuador plays an important role in the economy. Television networks have their own infrastructure and are organized according to their characteristics, needs, and interests. Programming strategies define how each television channel approaches fiction, considering three fundamental aspects: dominant consumption trends, storytelling (observing social markers such as race, social class, and gender), and the way stories are told. These aspects set the tone for understanding what is happening with narratives in fiction in Ecuador. Taking into account that fiction, and in particular soap operas, have been a key vehicle for the process of modernization and social integration established through television over the years.
