Abstract

This text describes ideas about conservation of nature that exist in Latin America today, which depict a Political Ecology perspective that has arisen in response to biological conservation, and the ideologies of neo-malthusianism and sustainable development. We analyse the main assertions of From the perspectives of eco-marxism and eco-socialism, we analyse the main assertions of the political ecology of the Third World and popular environmentalism. We end the introduction by mentioning the current critique of development in the region that is informed by the paradigm of good living. This introduction serves to contextualize conservation initiatives in Ecuador, our case study. We analyze the national system of protected areas and the Socio Bosque (Forest Partner) Programme of the Ecuadorian government.
