Abstract

Political ecology studies the power relations that define the processes of environmental change and the relationship of human beings with nature, providing alternative and critical explanations to ecological crises without reducing them to poor technical operation or ill-informed political decisions. Explanations that also recognize that social and environmental processes reproduce each other. Latin American political ecology has privileged the study of socio-environmental conflicts and disputes that have their origin in unequal power relations in a post-colonial world, and that result in environmental injustices. The political ecology of Latin American roots has also disputed the concept of nature and the human being-nature relationship, taking, for this purpose, indigenous epistemologies from all over the continent. Both lines of thought and reflection often arise from the action of social movements and environmental activists, which are then echoed in the academic world: Thus the production of thought in the region has an important tendency towards understanding the world in order to transform it. In Ecuador it is no different: political ecological thought in the country has been built from the different struggles that have been carried out: This anthology gathers analysis and reflections on those socio-environmental struggles that set important precedents for the environmental justice movement in Latin America and probably the world.
