Abstract
The current study focused on the design and implementation of a 42-item questionnaire to determine media literacy levels in adolescents. It was designed based on the categorization of indicators belonging to each of the six dimensions of media competences proposed by Ferres and Piscitelli (2012) through the use of contemporary audiovisual referents. Findings suggest a deficit in the domain of functional and analytical skills expected to be developed by the 63 participants; additionally, assessment results evidenced a gender gap in the development of media literacy among adolescents since women achieved higher scores. On the other hand, a correlation between the average obtained and participants' age was found; older participants obtained progressive higher scores. This research contributes to available work on skills needed for people to interact through new media tools.
