Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of knowledge management and its fundamental role in fostering a thriving research ecosystem at the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana (UPS) in Ecuador. The importance of knowledge management in research is highlighted, emphasizing the importance of continuous generation and exchange of ideas. Based on the conceptual framework of a "Research Ecosystem", the UPS approach integrates four key pillars: Research Ecosystem, Knowledge as a Common Resource, CREAMINKA as an Ecosystem Digester, and the Knowledge Repository. This knowledge management model is deeply rooted in Nonaka and Takeuchi's knowledge management model, underscoring the value of social interaction and communication in generating and sharing knowledge. It underlines the need for knowledge to be treated as a common resource accessible to all, facilitating collaborative learning and enriching collective knowledge. Additionally, the introduction of Creaminka and PURE at the university leverages artificial intelligence and data mining to digest and process information, making it a valuable resource for the UPS community. The paper also discusses several strategies used to strengthen the research ecosystem, including collaboration between unlikely pairs, incentives for scientific production, and recognition through research awards. These strategies have fueled rapid growth in research, innovation and entrepreneurship at UPS, despite the university's relatively young age. The document concludes by presenting a new collaboration strategy, powered by cutting-edge artificial intelligence models, with the aim of further improving research, innovation and business collaboration within the UPS.
