Abstract
This book focuses on the analysis of the social production of space, models of natural resource exploitation, and social relations of production in the former Oriente province, now Napo province, in the Ecuadorian Upper Amazon. The analysis seeks to demonstrate how historical and social strategies of expansion, reproduction, and capital accumulation developed around nature, shaping contradictory social spaces and dynamics that foster projects of territorial appropriation and transformation. In this research, the movements of historical reality are conceived as an ongoingprocess behind the social production of space in the former Oriente province, created in 1861 by President Gabriel García Moreno and dissolved in 1920 by President José Luis Tamayo, without halting the process of capitalist expansion and reproduction. These pages discuss the creation and dissolution of the territorial electorate as a result of historical strategies for capital expansion, highlighting the interests and appropriations of various actors and the different projects for appropriating nature and imposing new social relations of production that, in later years, would give rise to the oil exploration process in the 1970s. With this objective, the study aims to characterize the socio-historical transformations of the territory in the former Eastern Province, identify models and projects of natural resource exploitation and their impact on the social production of space, and analyze the social relations of production and the tensions between social actors and extractive projects. The research is based on the historical-dialectical method and is structured in three chapters: the first is entitled "Socio-historical Transformations of the Territory in the Former Eastern Province"; the second, "The Castilian Decline and the Origin of the Incipient Ecuadorian State"; and the third, "New Social Relations of Production: Actors, Tensions, and Interests.".
