Abstract
In this research work we were able to determine the carbon footprint of the Salesian Polytechnic University, Quito, south campus; the value obtained for 2012 was 873.88 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. The methodology applied is the "Greenhouse Gas Protocol" which establishes the calculation of three scopes, called Scopes. For UPS-South, Scope 1 related to the use of fuels is 16.82 tons of CO2 eq, Scope 2 itself which has to do with electricity consumption is 209.07 t CO2 eq and Scope 3 which considers GHG emissions from the acquisition and use of inputs, from the decomposition of organic solid waste and liquid discharges, has a value of 647.99 t CO2 eq. Since in 2012 there were 3870 individuals performing activities within the UPS-South facilities, it is possible to establish an annual per capita H-C value of 225.81 kg CO2 eq emitted into the atmosphere. To verify these results, SimaPro 7.3 software was used to obtain a total of 861.03 t CO2 eq. The difference between the two carbon footprint values is due to the fact that the software does not consider waste or liquid discharges from the campus.
