Abstract
In the field of electrical maintenance, crimping systems are used to extend or branch lines in medium-voltage power grids. Conventional crimping systems do not have interchangeable dies for different conductor sizes and must be operated remotely using impact poles. In this study, interchangeable dies were manufactured and carburized for a cold-crimping machine for aluminum stirrups. Using Fick's Second Law for diffusion, a carburization process was designed for a commercial steel (SAE 1018) based on an expression relating the hardness of the cemented layer to its thickness. The results showed a combination of hardness and toughness that allows for an expanded range of use and a longer lifespan of the crimping dies.
