Abstract
The beginning of popular and community communication in Ecuador had two important edges; it was consolidated as a literacy strategy in which education was the key to the evangelizing process; and the other position, and the most controversial, is to understand popular communication as an organizational, unionist and revolutionary process. There are several figures that represented these processes, however, there are institutionalized, iconic figures that set a communication precedent for their dialogue with indigenous and Amazonian communities. The Latin American Association of Radio Education (ALER) was consolidated as a fundamental piece for this accompaniment, since its 48 years of work allowed them to position themselves as a network of networks.
