Abstract
Much importance has been given in Ecuador to the diversification and strengthening of its productive matrix. In this context, the metal-mechanic industry is particularly relevant as being considered a strategic sector. However, literature does not provide a clear definition of the industry scope. Consequently, past sectoral economic reports could not be adjusted to the Ecuadorian socioeconomic panorama. Confronting this, the economic activities that comprise metal-mechanic industry scope are identified in this work through a Delphi test. Then, an economical characterization of the industry in Guayaquil is made on the basis of selected economic variables. As a result, it was determined that 40 economic classes make up the metal mechanic industry scope, and specifically Guayaquil, is established as an important strongholdof the industry nationwide.
