Abstract

The chapter "From Words to Deeds: Present and Future of Indigenous Rights in Ecuador" critically examines the gap between legal recognition and practical implementation of Indigenous rights in Ecuador. It analyzes constitutional advances and persistent challenges in areas like land rights, free prior informed consent, and self-governance, focusing on socio-environmental conflicts. The text highlights non-compliance with international frameworks (e. g., ILO Convention 169) and the criminalization of Indigenous protests. Through a critical lens, it explores community resistance strategies and proposes pathways to materialize rights amidst extractive pressures and state opposition. This essential analysis reveals the contradictions between Ecuador's progressive legislation and on-the-ground realities, offering insights into Indigenous struggles at a pivotal moment between legal promises and systemic barriers.
