Abstract

Saúl Uribe Taborda and Fredy Aguilar Rodríguez in their research, "De polvo en polvo: Consumo de drogas y uso de la violencia en un barrio popular de Quito" present us with a life story, developed through participant observation, offering the interpretation made by the social actors of their own reality combined with the interpretation made by the researcher. The location in the temporal and spatial context has been altered, with the purpose of avoiding the complexity implied in the identification of the actors due to the delicacy and complexity of the research. Initially, a study on drugs and survival strategies was carried out; however, during the coexistence in the neighborhood it was realized that most people were not interested in talking about drugs, nor were the users themselves, but rather in talking about their suffering, the violence to which they are exposed, the school and work disappointments, the lack of opportunities and their yearnings for a better future. The reflexivity of the researcher, as in most cases in ethnographies, was very complex, so that on many occasions he was accompanied by nuns, which facilitated his interaction with the subjects of the research. This is when Chola, in order to demonstrate the levels of violence received since her childhood, both in the school from which she withdrew and at home, says: "These marks I have (she points to her head and waist) are bitterness, if these marks were to speak, they would not finish speaking".
