Abstract
The transition of children between the family and school environments in early education and first grade is often marked by shyness and inhibition due to the recent separation from the family nucleus. This study evaluated the impact of the activity "Storytelling with Family" on the development of social and communication skills, as well as on strengthening family bonds among students in Early Education II and First Grade at UEPCJAT in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The "Storytelling with Family" activity involved children and their parents creating an original story with illustrations and scenographic materials designed at home. Subsequently, the students narrated their stories in the classroom, sometimes accompanied by their parents, who actively participated in the performance. This approach incorporated costumes, accessories, and visual elements to foster creativity, language use, and interaction among participants. The main objective was to evaluate how this activity influences the comprehensive development of students. A mixed-method approach was adopted, combining qualitative and quantitative methods. The sample included 84 students and 75 parents. Data collection methods included direct observations, parent surveys, and a rubric for evaluating communication skills applied before and after the activity. The results showed significant improvements in children’s communication skills, with over 85% reaching the "Acquired" level in vocabulary, fluency, and confidence. Additionally, the activity strengthened family bonds, with more than 70% of parents reporting improvements in communication and quality time spent together. Differences between levels indicated that, although First Grade students started with an intermediate level, the activity was crucial for consolidating their skills. In Early Education II, progress reflected a gradual evolution from a basic level. The activity proved to be an effective pedagogical strategy for promoting comprehensive learning, enhancing linguistic competencies and family cohesion. Continuous implementation and adjustments, such as parent workshops and provision of guiding materials, are recommended to maximize its impact.
