Abstract

This paper deals with the management of urban gardens based on traditional practices by older adults in the La Católica city of Cuenca. The deductive and inductive methods were used to gather information through surveys, and interviews. The data obtained reflects that 57% know about urban agriculture; qualify with 57%, 29% and 14% as excellent, very good and good traditional practices. And to the promotion of urban gardens they qualify as 71% of high importance, while 29% consider it of medium importance. Regarding the management of urban gardens, older adults simplify field work to be adapted to the city in terms of the preparation, planting, care and irrigation of their crops and the use of plants such as verbena, chili and nettle in Pest and disease control. As for the social implication; urban agriculture is an important part in the lives of older adults who adapted their traditional practices to the environment in which they operate today.
