Abstract
his research presents the results of a systematic literature review that contributes to the understanding of the current state of an emerging field of knowledge that crosses communication studies and social movement studies. It analyzes the scientific production on social movements and communication in the main academic databases during the last five years in Ecuador. It maps the main social actors - movements and activist networks - whose forms of exogenous or self-managed media representation have become the object of study; the conceptual and theoretical approaches through which these inquiries have been worked; the methodologies and research techniques used; and, finally, the innovative conceptual contributions derived from these investigations, through which academics expand the consolidation of this field of knowledge from a situated perspective. Within this framework, this research contributes to the contemporary understanding of critical communication research, especially in the context of the recent processes of social outbursts in the region.
