Abstract
Teaching communicative reading and writing skills in diverse sociocultural contexts does not merely involve teaching content, but rather introducing formative aspects that aid in learning a new culture. The objective of this study was to determine how university students develop their socio-communicative skills and their reactions to social groups. The study used an action-research method through a cooperative approach and interview techniques with representatives of two social groups in the city of Cuenca. The results indicate that reading and writing skills are not fully developed, given that participants maintain their own communication style with non-normative skills, and students and/or guides develop social skills such as empathy and communication. They also built social relationships through cooperation and problem-solving, addressing diversity. It is concluded that basic skills are a reflection of one's own culture and should be viewed through the construction of meanings with pedagogical support and a projection into life.
