Abstract
The present investigation is a study aimed at comparing the production efficiency of a complete left-handed operator when handling a modified pedestal drill, with the force controls on the left side of the machine versus a right-handed operator operating a pedestal drill without modifications. Through a descriptive study of ten male people, of five small metal-mechanic companies located in the north of Quito, Ecuador, with average age 19,5 ± 1,4 years and average experience in the use of the drill of 5,7 ± 2,7 months, productivity was assessed with SPC (Statistical Process Control) and drilling quality using MSA (Measurement System Analysis). As a first step, the operators were evaluated and categorized through the Edinburgh protocol (quantitative analysis of laterality), obtaining a population of 100% “consistently left-handed”. Later a comparative analysis between the theoretical and experimental forces that the operator needs to make a complete perforation was made, Force that serves as input for SPC and MSA. Finally, a study of the times of a left-handed person was carried out in the drilling process in the modified machines and without modification. Concluding that the efficiency of the left-handed operator decreases according to its degree of laterality when operating a drill without modifications.
