Abstract

Mobility is one of the most complex and interesting urban processes, as it represents the footprint of people's inter-actions with the urban environment (Orellana, 2011). By studying mobility, we are also understanding other as-pects of the city that are closely related to it, such as pub-lic space, urban systems, social equity, energy, institu-tional capacity, environmental aspects, and population health. Urban mobility is, therefore, one of the most im-portant indicators of a city's quality of life, which can be summarized in the phrase "tell me how you move, and I'll tell you what kind of city you are." The case of Cuenca (Ecuador) is frequently viewed with interest by decision-makers, urban planners, researchers, politicians, and individuals interested in urban issues. Its status as an intermediate city, with a relatively high quali-ty of life, quality basic services, well-maintained public spaces, and functional urban systems, has led it to be con-sidered an atypical case in the context of Latin American cities, and mobility is one of the focal points of that inter-est.
