Abstract

Biogas from the Cuenca landfill is a source of renewable energy with a high impact on the economic growth of the city and the reduction of greenhouse gases; therefore, it is essential to analyze its potential to improve its use in the production of electricity and capture system. The evaluation begins with the analysis of the biogas composition, where it is identified that during 5 years the main characteristics are 52.3% me-thane (CH4), 45.21% carbon dioxide (CO2), 0.72% oxygen (O2) and a flow in 2023 of 622 m3/h. Based on these results, biogas wells with little methanogenic activity were identified for the injection of 12 m3 of leachate from the same landfill and so that no oxygen enters, leaving them with a post recirculation composition of 51.9% of CH4, 46.13 % of CO2, 0.76 % of O2 and a flow of 646 m3/h giving an increase of 3. 72 % in the rate of biogas generation, with these data is evaluated using the first using the LandGEM software version 3.03, where, an increase of 1.72% was calculated; and, second with the model of Biogas of Ec-uador giving in the calculation an increase of 1.83% of the total biogas in the landfill, therefore, it is a method that, if it helps to improve the biogas potential.
