Abstract
Student dropout and repetition represent significant problems affecting the economic development of a society, with serious repercussions in the higher education system, both public and private, due to the amount of resources spent per student. This article discusses the external factors of student dropout in Higher Education, taking as a case study the Industrial Engineering degree at the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, Guayaquil. Despite the existence of many causes of desertion that have been studied by UNESCO and other institutions of Higher Education, including the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, this paper focuses on the analysis of the external causes to the higher education system that led to the academic dropout in Industrial Engineering. As part of the study it was carried out a survey, the same that was applied to a base of 386 students who dropped out in the previous academic periods, namely: 44th, 45th, 46th and 47th, obtaining information from 140 former students, which facilitated the realization of an inferential analysis factors that affect the student dropout. The inferential analysis focuses on obtaining significant probabilistic evidence to prove the hypotheses proposed in this investigation.
