Abstract

The present investigation studies a solar-assisted direct expansion heat pump with a water recirculation system. The heat exchangers used were a copper collector/evaporator of 0.75 m2 and a condenser in the form of a coil built in copper pipe 2.49 m long and 8 turns, immersed in a tank with 5 liters of water. For water recirculation, a centrifugal pump of 20 L/min at 110 V was used. The compressor installed is a 12-24 V DC variable speed compressor using R600a as working fluid. The expansion device used was an electronic valve. The experimental tests were developed for a configuration with recirculation and without water recirculation, considering similar climatic conditions. In this way, it is possible to establish which configuration provides the best performance in the system. A WS-1201 weather station was used to obtain solar radiation, wind speed and ambient temperature data. This system provided domestic hot water at 45 °C in 40 to 50 minutes depending on weather conditions. The maximum COP of the system with recirculation was 9.83, 8.04 % higher than the system without recirculation. The heating time took 10 minutes less for the system with recirculation, 16.67 % less than when using the system without recirculation.
