A Comparative Study of Traditional (RUP and MSF) Versus Agile (SCRUM and XP) Software Development Methodologies

Abstract

Software development methodologies are a guide for creating computer programs. They aim to help businesses avoid errors, adapt to change, deliver software on time, and manage resources efficiently. This article reviews the literature on traditional and agile software development methodologies. The goal is to identify the characteristics of each type of methodology to help businesses choose the most appropriate one. The review shows that traditional methodologies suit large or complex software projects. In contrast, agile methodologies are suitable for small or medium-sized software projects or those that require a great deal of flexibility. However, choosing the correct method is only sometimes straightforward. Businesses must consider several factors, such as the size and complexity of the project, the customer's requirements, the deadlines and budget, and the development team's preferences.
