Project Details

Description

This project focuses on characterizing the dairy goat sector in Ecuador, a vital pillar for small producers, despite socio-cultural and technical restrictions limiting sustainable development. The main objective is to address the lack of updated scientific information regarding this sector. The methodology comprises four main axes: first, identifying the degree of technification and geographic distribution of farms through detailed surveys. Second, determining zoometric parameters and mammary gland conformation to assess suitability for mechanical milking. Third, analyzing the physicochemical and hygienic-sanitary quality of the milk, utilizing advanced equipment such as the MilkoScan FT6200 and Fossomatic mirror to measure composition, somatic cell count, and bacterial load. Finally, identifying the etiological agents of caprine mastitis through culture, biochemical tests, PCR (using commercial kits and specific primers), and genetic sequencing (including Oxford Nanopore MinION technology). The outcomes aim to provide a scientific basis for supporting producers and formulating public policies to foster the sector.

Goal:
To conduct a comprehensive characterization of the dairy goat sector in Ecuador, covering technical, morphological, milk quality, and sanitary aspects, in order to generate scientific information that supports sector improvement and public policy design.

Research lines:
Animal production
