The Andean Chakra and the Resilience of Rural Communities Facing the COVID-19 Pandemic in the Ecuadorian Sierra

This project addresses the vulnerability of small rural producers in Ecuador, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which deepened food insecurity and exposed weaknesses in the agri-food system. The research focuses on the ancestral practice of the 'Chakra' (an integrated and sustainable agro-pastoral system) as a key strategy for community resilience and food sovereignty, particularly following social isolation. The study will be conducted in the central and northern Ecuadorian highlands using a mixed-methods approach (participatory action research) and analytical/experimental methods. Specific objectives include identifying agronomic practices within the Chakra and their socio-environmental relationships, determining water use efficiency and water footprint across different irrigation methods (drip vs. sprinkler) for various crops, and characterizing soil microbiology following the application of bio-inputs. The participatory methodology will involve communities in data collection through surveys, interviews, and georeferenced experimental trials. The ultimate aim is to validate the Chakra as a sustainable alternative that promotes local knowledge, rational use of natural resources, and strengthens community bonds in the face of future crises.<br/><br/><b>Goal</b>: <br/>To analyze the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the recovery of the 'Chakra' practice as a strategy for sustainable agriculture and the resilience of rural Ecuadorian communities.
