Description
This research project, in its fourth phase, focuses on the comprehensive study of selected species from the Orchidaceae family in Ecuador, including genera such as Caucaea, Gongora, Bulbophyllum, Dichaea, Epidendrum, Huntleya, Maxillaria, Sobralia, and Stelis. Given the erosion of biodiversity due to anthropogenic activities, the team aims to document and validate the pharmacological potential of these plants, building upon ancestral knowledge and previous ethnobotanical studies.
The methodology ranges from collection across 11 Ecuadorian provinces to advanced molecular analysis (DNA Barcoding) for taxonomic updates and endophyte identification. Furthermore, assays for antioxidant activity, antibacterial properties, and toxicity (LC50) are conducted to determine their viability for the phytopharmaceutical industry. Additionally, the project implements in vitro culture techniques for polyploidy induction to obtain high-yield genetic lines.
The project's impact is multidisciplinary, strengthening the academic training of biotechnology students, implementing technological capabilities in the laboratories of the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, and contributing to the conservation of native genetic resources. Expected outcomes include the publication of scientific articles, the completion of theses, and the generation of a molecular database to support future pharmacological research.<br/><br/><b>Goal</b>: <br/>To conduct a taxonomic study, identify endophytes, and evaluate the antibacterial, toxicological, and anticancer properties of selected Orchidaceae species in Ecuador.
