Description

This research project addresses the environmental consequences of recurrent forest fires in the Yanajaca and Palta-Pucará páramos, located in the Pesillo Community, Pichincha, which have affected extensive areas of flora and fauna and impact local water availability. The central problem is the lack of locally informed studies to justify effective preventive and mitigation actions against the burning of these areas, despite their contribution to climate change. The proposed methodology adopts an integrative approach, starting with mapping and delimiting the affected area using GPS and drones, followed by the selection of soil samples for detailed laboratory analysis of macronutrients, micronutrients, and physicochemical characteristics. Concurrently, GHG emissions will be calculated using established methodologies. Furthermore, surveys, direct observation, and interviews with community members will be conducted to inventory the affected biodiversity and gather contextual information. Finally, the scientific results obtained will be used to propose a strategic reforestation plan using native species, aiming to restore soil nutritional properties and provide solid arguments for informed decision-making at local and regional levels regarding integrated resource management and fire prevention.

Goal:
To estimate the physical, chemical, and biological alterations of the soil, as well as the contribution of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from forest fires that occurred in the Pesillo Community.

Research lines:
Evaluation and mitigation of environmental impact
