Project Details
Description
This project addresses bovine mastitis, a priority sanitary problem affecting milk production and quality among small and medium-sized dairy farmers in the northern zone of Pichincha, specifically in the Cayambe canton. The multifactorial disease, caused by diverse microorganisms, leads to reduced production, increased treatment costs (including antibiotic resistance to drugs like Streptomycin and Amoxicillin), and physicochemical alterations in the milk. Previous studies have shown high prevalence rates (up to 66%) and incidence (70%) in the area, identifying poor milking practices as the main risk factor. The proposed methodology involves screening sampling via milk cans per associated producer across 7 collection centers. Samples will be analyzed in the Milk Quality Laboratory at the Salesian Polytechnic University to determine the prevalence and incidence of clinical and subclinical mastitis, providing crucial data for local livestock health management.

Goal:
The main objective of this project is to study the epidemiological problem of bovine mastitis in the northern zone of the Pichincha province, analyzing its prevalence and incidence in dairy herds.

Research lines:
animal biotechnology
