Savings and Credit Cooperatives and Their Role in the Securities Market: Vision of the Popular Economy in the Stock Market

This research project examines the participation of segment 1 savings and credit cooperatives (COACs) in the Quito stock market. Despite being key drivers of economic and financial development in Ecuador, these institutions face significant challenges, such as a lack of stock market culture and regulatory barriers, which limit their full integration into the stock market system. Using a mixed methodology that combines quantitative analysis of financial data and qualitative research through interviews with key stakeholders, the study evaluates how the issuance and trading of fixed-income securities, such as obligations and social bonds, impact the cooperatives' ability to finance productive projects and improve their financial services. The analysis seeks to determine whether this foray into the stock market strengthens the popular and solidarity economy without compromising its fundamental values of equity and solidarity. Final results indicate that although COACs have experienced significant growth in their assets within the national financial system, their participation as issuers in the stock market remains limited, with a preference for acquiring securities. The study concludes by providing strategic recommendations to improve the sustainable participation of these entities in the stock market, thereby promoting financial inclusion and local development.<br/><br/><b>Goal</b>: <br/>Analyze the role of segment 1 savings and credit cooperatives in the Ecuadorian stock market, evaluating their participation from the perspective of the popular and solidarity economy.
