Description
The 'Roots in the City' project addresses food vulnerability in the popular neighborhoods of southern Quito, where child malnutrition and poor nutrition are critical issues. Given the lack of resilience in the local agri-food system, the initiative proposes the creation of a pilot urban garden at the Madre Tierra Bioferia as an innovative and sustainable solution.
Using Participatory Action Research (PAR) methodology, the project engages the community in implementing agroecological farming techniques, substrate management, and pest control. The goal is to transform underutilized spaces into centers for environmental education and healthy food production, fostering self-sufficiency and local empowerment.
Although the project faced logistical challenges and leadership changes that prevented the physical installation of the drip irrigation system, residents were successfully trained in cultivation techniques and resource management. The impact focuses on creating a community production model that reduces dependence on processed foods, promotes responsible consumption, and strengthens the social fabric in the participating neighborhoods.<br/><br/><b>Goal</b>: <br/>Establish a pilot urban garden in the La Biloxi neighborhood, Quito, to improve food security, promote environmental education, and strengthen community cohesion.
